The trucking industry continues to offer strong career opportunities in 2026, especially in California where freight movement remains critical to the economy. For individuals looking for a stable, hands-on profession with long-term demand, truck driving remains one of the most accessible career paths available.
If you’re wondering how to get started, understanding the process can help you move forward with confidence.
Meet the Basic CDL Requirements
To begin a trucking career in California, drivers must first meet the minimum CDL requirements. Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving
- Be 21 years old for interstate driving
- Hold a valid California driver’s license
- Pass a DOT medical examination
Drivers must also obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before beginning behind-the-wheel training.
Complete CDL Training
Professional CDL training prepares students for both the CDL exam and real-world driving situations. At America Truck Driving School, students receive hands-on instruction designed to build confidence behind the wheel.
Training typically includes:
- Vehicle inspections
- Backing maneuvers
- Highway driving
- Safety procedures
- ELDT-compliant instruction
Hands-on experience is one of the most important parts of becoming a successful commercial driver.
Pass the CDL Skills Test
After training is completed, students must pass:
- A pre-trip inspection test
- Basic vehicle control skills
- An on-road driving test
Successfully completing these steps earns your CDL license.
